SPEED STEEL

The Steel Challenge started in the US in 1981 and migrated to NZ over the next few years. The Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships are one of the shooting circuit's crown jewels and America's premier professional pistol competition.

SPEED IN NEW ZEALAND

In NZ, the format is the same: your time is your score. He or she who has the shortest time will win! 5 runs and keep your best 4 to count (Outer limits have 4 runs and keep your best 3), so the scoring couldn’t be simpler. All penalties are +3 seconds to your time, and the maximum time allowed for a single string is 30 seconds. So you can see exactly what you are capable of doing. This is markedly different from IPSC, where your score is a percentage of someone else’s.

Speed Shooting, as it is known in NZ, began in 1987 and has continued ever since. The stages run in the United States have changed several times; at one point, they changed yearly. However, the stages shot in New Zealand are the same as those shot by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA) in the USA.

The courses of fire are known as Roundabout, Pendulum, Smoke and Hope, Outer Limits, Speed Option, Accelerator, Five to Go and Showdown.

RRGC has a small but competitive speed shooting section. To learn more about this fast-paced event, click this link to contact the section leader.
