FIREARMS SAFETY

Firearms ownership and possession are a privilege in New Zealand, not a right. Whether we are range shooters or hunters, shooting for recreation or putting food on the table, each of us is responsible for treating firearms with the respect they deserve.

Every firearm accident ends badly for someone. When a bullet leaves a barrel, there is no way to "take the shot back." The seven basic rules are intended to guide shooters so they may enjoy their chosen sport safely and productively.

At RRGC, safety is incorporated into everything we do, from the way we teach shooting to the way we shoot. The safety of participants, visitors, observers, and our neighbours over the fence is considered with every shooting event permitted on our ranges under the Range Standing Orders.

However, no matter how much is written down or spoken, the ultimate determining factor in all safe shooting is the person behind the gun.  You, the shooter, are our greatest threat to, and our best defender of, our collective safety. Ultimately, how you approach safety makes the difference every time.

The following short videos from the Fireams Safety Authority reference the 7 basic rules against a hunting background. However, the principles remain equally valid for range shooting. You may not look at these more than once, but if only one quick tip is picked up, the time you spend watching will have been worthwhile.
